The Dali (Passerelle in Korean) programme focuses on works that all originate from the encounter between different musical cultures, while reflecting the artistic personality of Seohyeon Kim, who brings together Korean and French cultures. The first part of the programme is devoted to French composers who showed great interest in non-European music in their day: Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Maurice Delage. With the exception of the Prelude a L'Apres-midi d'un faune, arranged by David Walter, the arrangements were made by composition students at the Paris Conservatoire under the supervision of Cyril Lehn. The aim of these arrangements was twofold: firstly, to preserve the original character of the composition despite the arrangement, but also, in the case of the vocal works, to offer a purely instrumental version, with the sung part sometimes assigned to the flute, sometimes divided up throughout the orchestra: a real challenge for the arrangers and the instrumentalists alike, who had to adapt their playing to give it a certain vocality. The other part of the programme presents three pieces commissioned for this recording. These creations had to respond to an important difficulty: the use of musical material from a very popular Korean genre, Arirang songs.
