10 January 2022: My violinist friend Magdalena Geka and I gave a recital at the Salle Cortot, featuring Marguerite Canal's Sonata for violin and piano, a work we had discovered shortly before with our chamber music teacher at the Paris Conservatoire, Claire Desert. Our enthusiasm for this piece was matched by that of the audience at the concert, and this was the origin of the project to record other French women composers who had won the Prix de Rome. The Prix de Rome, an artistic competition created by Louis XIV in 1663, was originally open only to painters and sculptors, then to architects from 1720 and to engravers from 1804. It was not until 1803 that composers were able to apply for residence at the Villa Medici, which was designated the seat of the Academie de France in Rome that same year. The competition, which had long been closed to women, admitted its first winner in 1911: Lucienne Heuvelmans, a sculptor. The counterpoint and fugue class at the Paris Conservatoire was forbidden to women until the end of the nineteenth century, and it was not until 1903 that they were allowed to compete for the Prix de Rome: Lili Boulanger became the very first winner in 1913, followed by Marguerite Canal in 1920 and Jeanne Leleu in 1923.
