1915 年出生於密西西比三角洲地區的 Rolling Fork 村落，幼年時被當時優秀的藍調樂手如 Charley Patton， Son House，Robert Johnson 等人影響成長，從他的歌曲中就可聽出這些前輩們的音樂風格與吉他滑音等演奏方式。傳統藍調音樂是把當時生活上遭受到各種痛苦絕望與內心壓抑的感受，透過簡單吉他伴奏把的苦悶心情用歌聲演唱抒發出來。1943 年來到芝加哥尋找發展，開始有機會灌錄唱片時 Muddy Waters 把這些傳統藍調音樂經由改編演唱後希望可以被更多大眾接納，這股藍調風潮慢慢的從芝加哥開始掀起到全美國各地，進而更推廣到大西洋對岸英國甚至到全世界。也影響了無數後輩藍調搖滾等音樂的發展，更是受到各音樂界極高的崇敬。
